| Australia
is a natural wonderland of endless beautiful, sandy white
beaches, crystal blue waters, ancient rock formations,
snow capped mountains, deserts and pristine rainforests.
Australia is the sixth largest country in the world and
has the lowest population density per square kilometre.
Australia has 16 world heritage listed properties with
its historic townships, bustling cities, vivid landscapes
and exotic flora and fauna all adding to its unique appeal.
Much of Australia's exotic flora and
fauna cannot be found anywhere else in the world and the
lifestyle is one second to none.
Australia is made up of six states and
two territories - News South Wales, Victoria, South Australia,
Western Australia, Queensland, Northern Territoty and
the Australian Capital Territory; the last being territories
of Australia.
For many overseas people, Australia
is often associated with images of tropical beaches, vast
deserts and the Great Barrier Reef. However, most Australians
live in the cooler southern half of the continent which
has a temperate, Mediterranean style climate with mild
winters and hot summers: ideal for outdoor living and
grape growing! Australia’s
culture, too, is rich in diversity with the heritage of
indigenous Australians enhanced by successive generations
of migrants
The climate in Australia can vary greatly
but we aren't generally subject to extremes of weather
due to a lack of physical features and the remote location
in proportion to other land masses. Australia's climate
ranges from tropical (monsoonal) in the north to temperate
in the south. About 40 percent of Australia is in the
tropical region and essentially has only two seasons,
a hot wet season and a warm dry season. More than two
thirds of Australia is covered by desert which accounts
for most of the population settling on the more temperate
coastal areas.
Australia has a population of approximately
19 million with about 85% of Australians living in urban
areas. The small population in proportion to the size
of the country results in a population density of 2 persons
per square kilometre (5.2 persons per square mile). Australia's
largest city, Sydney with a population of approximately
4 million has one of the lowest population densities of
any major world city. Australians, as a whole have a very
high rate of home ownership.
